How do I clean an old framed photo on canvas?
I think it's about 50/60 + years old and musty! My grandmother had stored in a garage and in need of TLC but Im afraid to try and clean I clean the cover image off (if thats even possible!) I do not know how to print photographs that long ago! hot water with mild detergent? Any help would be appreciated Thanks
Do not use soap and water or commercial cleaners. According to the IPI and other sources all cleaning degrades the image to keep and if done incorrectly can cause extreme damage. There are a few options 1) Take a photo lab, local and make repairs to reshoot the image and there are those who specialize in this type work. A resolution seeking "the restoration of Photography" will give you a number of companies that could do it for you as http://www.preserveyourpast.com/ 2) analysis on the computer (scan above) and correct it with your photo editor, then print http://www.gimpguru.org/AskTheGuru/G20040808/ 3) Try to clean thoroughly with a special photographic emulsion Photographic Solutions PEC own AS-12. If possible start in an area that will be covered by a carpet or a frame to see what happens. If it was the role, I would sure also soaked in distilled water, demineralized water and adequate drying of printing, but I'd be reluctant to try this on the web. If you decide to scan the picture 3rd or store the device photo takes a shot at a treatment chamber in the first place if the photo is very important to you.
