Why will Richard Petty be remembered as the greatest auto race car driver of all time?
Here are some reasons I think he was the greatest. No restrictor plates. When you got on it, it went. Not as many safety features. More drivers worked on their own cars. Nascar still enforced engine size and probably checked more often for illegal set-ups. The race tracks were not as safe.
He started over a thousand races, won seven championships and won 200 races. It was 1967 I believe that he won 27 races, ten of them in a row! Back in the 60s and 70s Petty and his boys were a well oiled machine. But probably what makes him so great is that he takes time for the fans and has a free camp for terminally ill children. Those two things mean more than his on track stuff in my opinion. Although the on track stuff isn't anything to sneeze at.
